City Council Meeting to be Held at the Swiftel Center

Brookings, S.D. (9/4/2020) – The Brookings City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, September 8 at 6:00p.m. will take place at the Swiftel Center (824 32nd Avenue, Brookings, SD 57006).

The event will be designed to adhere to proper social distancing to limit the spread of COVID-19. The Swiftel Center arena provides ample space so individuals can feel comfortable practicing social distancing while also having the opportunity to attend and/or participate in the City Council meeting. The Swiftel Center has implemented an extensive Health Safety Program to ensure guests are provided a safe and comfortable environment. Health and safety signage is posted throughout the facility as well as touchless hand sanitizing stations. Staff are frequently cleaning and disinfecting rooms and common touch surfaces. The City Council meeting is open to the public. The public is asked to maintain proper social distancing. Doors to the Swiftel Center arena will open at 5:00p.m., with the meeting beginning at 6:00p.m.

The City of Brookings will also offer an online option for individuals who want to provide public comment but do not feel comfortable attending in person. The link will be posted to the City website on September 8 and shared on the City social media pages. 

For individuals who want to watch the meeting live but do not want to provide public comment, the City of Brookings will broadcast the meeting through local cable Channel 9 on both Swiftel and Mediacom.  A “LiveTV” link will also be available on the City website, as well as YouTube.  Links will be made available the morning of September 8.

To ensure continuity of meeting proceedings, the City of Brookings asks all participants – both online and in-person – to maintain respect and civility for the good of the order. Background noise, clapping and/or comments will create challenges and delay proceedings. Individuals are asked to show respect for all those who attend and speak as well as respect for the process.

A second reading of Ordinance 20-019 “An Ordinance Amending Ordinance 20-010 to Revise Certain Measures which have been deemed necessary to slow the Community Spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the City of Brookings, SD” is scheduled for the meeting which includes two amendments in regards to mask mandates. One amendment will require all individuals attending or working events which require a City permit to wear a mask unless social distancing can be maintained. The second amendment will require all individuals to wear a mask in indoor businesses and indoor public places unless social distancing can be maintained. Exceptions are detailed within a resolution giving clarity to questions heard at the September 2 meeting.
