The City of Brookings has a vacancy on the Historic Preservation Commission effective immediately to fill an unexpired term through January 1, 2019. The purpose of the Historic Preservation Commission is to allow the city to engage in a comprehensive program of historic preservation to promote the inspiration, pleasure and enrichment of the citizens of Brookings through identification, documentation, preservation, promotion, and development of the city’s historic resources. The powers and responsibilities of the Commission are set forth in SDCL 1-19B and City Code of Ordinances Chapter 46.  

The Commission, totaling nine members, meets monthly on a day determined by the Commission. Members serve three-year terms. The Commission is required to maintain at least two “professional” members from the disciplines of history, architectural history, architecture, archaeology, planning, urban planning, American studies, American civilization, cultural geography or cultural anthropology. At least three of the total membership must be nonprofessional members, who represent a demonstrated interest, experience, or knowledge in historic preservation.
