The  South Dakota Department of Health COVID-19 webpage is updated daily and has confirmed: 

  • Total Cases: 1,390
  • Individuals Recovered: 1,000
  • Active Cases: 386
  • Spread Category: Substantial

COVID-19: Brookings Thresholds

UPDATED: Week Ending October 2, 2020

  1. Is the epidemic controlled? No
  2. Is the health system able to cope with a resurgence of COVID-19 cases that may arise after adapting some measures? Yes
  3. Is the public health surveillance system able to detect and manage the cases and their contacts, and identify a resurgence of cases in Brookings?
    a. Mitigation Level: No
    b. Suppression Level: No
    c. Approximate time to receive test results: 2 to 3 days

COVID-19: Weekly Summary

UPDATED: Week Ending October 24, 2020

Brookings County:

  • 1,380 cases:  181 cases this week vs. 215 in previous week  
  • 382 active cases (record high on 10/25)
  • 40 ever hospitalized: 10 new admissions this week vs. 11 in previous week
  • 4 total deaths – 2 deaths this week
  • Substantial community spread
  • Test positivity among people tested continues to be high at 29% (WHO recommends < 5%)

South Dakota: 

  • 39,203 cases: 5,934 cases this week vs. 4,705 in previous week*  
  • As of 10/25, 10,745 active cases* 
  • 2,436 ever hospitalized: 317 admissions this week vs. 253 in previous week*
  • As of 10/25, 366 individuals were hospitalized with COVID*
  • 375 total deaths: 52 deaths this week vs. 37 in previous week*
  • among people tested continues to be high at 40% (WHO recommends < 5%)*

USA:

  • 8.83 million cases: 485,267 new cases this week vs. 395,801 in previous week
  • Record high for 7-day average number of cases per day
  • 230,068 total deaths: 5,786 deaths this week vs. 5,000 in previous week

World:

  • 42.92 million cases: 2.98 million cases this week vs. 2.48 million in previous week
  • 1.15 million deaths: 40,116 deaths this week vs. 36,906 in previous week

Travel Restrictions:
If you are planning to travel either within or outside the U.S., you should look at possible travel restrictions since many states and countries are requiring anyone who has been in South Dakota to quarantine for two weeks or present evidence of a negative COVID test. In some states these are recommendations, while other states enforce these travel bans with relatively high fines. As of October 21, 2020, the following states require travelers from South Dakota to quarantine (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/10/travel/state-travel-restrictions.html [website updated daily]):

  • No new deaths
  • Substantial community spread.  For moderate spread need less than 34 cases in a week.  
  • Test positivity continues to be high at 36% (WHO recommends < 5%).
