The Human Rights Commission has the power to investigate alleging discrimination. The commission is also expected to: 
  • Advise and provide a forum for those subjected to unfair and discriminatory practices in the City and county
  • Advise City officials concerning issues of discrimination
  • Conduct educational programs and distribute information to further the commission’s policy to eliminate discrimination in the city
  • Study the existence, character, causes and extent of discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, property rights, education and public services
  • As appointed by the Mayor, serve as the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) liaison for the City of Brookings

The commission consists of 10 members who each serve a three-year term. The student position serves a one-year term. Residency is not required. Members are appointed to the board in January. For more information on requirements and responsibilities, view the City Code
