Responsibilities & Requirements
The Traffic Safety Committee will:
  • Act in an advisory capacity to the city manager, city engineer and the City Council as a whole in the coordination of traffic safety activities of the official agencies and departments of the City of Brookings
  • Aid in the overall reduction of traffic accidents, injuries and deaths on the city streets
  • Cooperate with city schools in promoting educational traffic safety aids
  • Develop and implement coordinated traffic safety programs that meet local needs
  • Educate the public in traffic safety
  • Establish safety priorities for the City
  • Foster public knowledge and support of traffic law enforcement and traffic engineering problems
  • Promote public acceptance of official programs proposed or instigated by the City
  • Review and approve project applications for funding
  • Serve in a liaison capacity between the City of Brookings and the South Dakota Highway Safety Program in developing the State Highway Safety Program and in meeting the National Highway Safety Program standards

Member Requirements
The board consists of 13 members who each serve a three-year term. The committee be made up of the following representatives:
  • Automobile insurance representative
  • Brookings Chief of Police or their designee
  • Chamber of Commerce Representative
  • City engineer or their designee
  • Industry representative
  • Jogger / bicyclist representative
  • School superintendent or their designee
  • Senior citizen representative
  • South Dakota State University Chief of Security or their designee
  • Street superintendent or their designee
  • Three citizen-at-large representatives

The majority of the members shall be residents of the City of Brookings. Appointment of members is December 31.
