Chief’s Letter of Welcome

Darrell Hartmann, Fire Chief

I would like to welcome you to the official website of the Brookings Fire Department. I hope you find the site informative.

I take great pride and honor in introducing you to our department. The Brookings Fire Department is a combination department comprised of three career employees and 45 volunteer firefighters. We no doubt have some of the most dedicated and talented firefighters in the area. Our department has improved in all areas in the last couple of years and the reason for the improvement is due to the dedicated and the hard work of the firefighters.

Brookings, South Dakota's third largest city, is located on the intersection of Interstate 29 and State Highway 14 in Brookings County, South Dakota. Our department serves the City of Brookings with a population of 22,056 and the South Dakota State University with 12,000 students. We provide service not only to the City of Brookings, but also serve approximately 186 square miles in Brookings County and 27 square miles in Moody County.

Our department has a roster of 45 volunteer members, and we respond to over 200 calls per year. Our department provides structural and wildland fire suppression, all forms of rescue coverage and provides mutual aid to our other six fire departments in Brookings County and other communities in surrounding counties.

I have been fortunate to serve as Fire Chief since November 1998, and am proud to serve with the dedicated men and women that we have in Brookings. Most of our members have numerous certifications, including Firefighter I & II, Driver / Operator, Technical Rescue, Fire / Arson Investigation and Hazardous Materials Operations.

We currently offer services like educational classes, training for businesses and industries and tours of the fire stations to mention a few. Our department also handles all fire inspections and plan reviews within the City of Brookings.

We have formed and participate in the Brookings County Fire / Arson Task Force comprised of members from the Brookings Fire Department, Brookings Police Department and the Brookings County Sheriff's Office to investigate fire cause and origin for Brookings County.

We have a City Council / City Manager form of government, and thanks to the support of our City Government, we are a progressive department working on more adequately serving our citizens.

Thanks for visiting our web page!

Yours in service, Darrell Hartmann, Fire Chief
