COVID-19: Brookings Thresholds

- Is the epidemic controlled? No. Rt is been increasing over the last week both locally and statewide.
- Is the health system able to cope with a resurgence of COVID-19 cases that may arise after adapting some measures? Based on current census, Brookings Health System feels they can handle the lowest of the anticipated numbers (n = 12). However, staffing will be challenged, thereby limiting the ability to sustain care for the long-term, with the highest anticipated number (n = 37).
- Is the public health surveillance system able to detect and manage the cases and their contacts, and identify a resurgence of cases in Brookings?
a. Mitigation Level: No, 3-5 times more testing is needed for Brookings County and 6-7 times more testing is needed for South Dakota.
b. Suppression Level: No, test positivity is 30%-59%, which is far from the 3% test positivity needed for suppression.
c. Approximate Time to Receive Test Results: 2 to 5 days

- Substantial spread.
- 2,063 cases: 279 cases this week vs. 239 in the previous week
- 550 active cases on Nov 15th (up from 453 last Sunday)
- 70 ever hospitalized: 12 new admissions this week vs. 11 in the previous week
- 13 total deaths – 4 new deaths this week vs. 3 deaths in the previous week
- Test positivity among people tested (40%) and among tests done (21%) continues to be high (WHO recommends < 5%).
South Dakota:
- 65,381 cases: 9,977 cases this week vs. 8,080 in the previous week
- 19,360 active cases on Nov 15th (up from 15,750 last Sunday)
- 3,644 ever hospitalized: 460 admissions this week vs. 463 in the previous week
- 553 individuals hospitalized in SD with COVID on Nov 8th (up from 546 last Sunday)
- 644 total deaths: 108 deaths this week vs. 99 in the previous week
- Test positivity among people tested (58%) and among tests done (26%) continues to be high (WHO recommends < 5%).
USA:
- 11.2 million cases: 1,043,241 new cases this week vs. 780,387 in the previous week
- 251,256 total deaths: 7,999 deaths this week vs. 7,185 in the previous week
World:
- 54.3 million cases: 4.06 million cases this week vs. 3.88 million in the previous week
- 1.25 million deaths: 55,000 deaths this week vs. 45,000 in the previous week
