• Spread Category: Substantial

COVID-19: Brookings Thresholds

UPDATED: November 28, 2020

1. Is the epidemic controlled? No, although Rt has been less than 1.0 in Brookings and South Dakota for the last 8 days.
2. Is the health system able to cope with a resurgence of COVID-19 cases that may arise after adapting some measures? Based on current census, Brookings Health System feels they can handle the lowest of the anticipated numbers (n = 8). However, staffing will be challenged, thereby limiting the ability to sustain care for the long-term, with the highest anticipated number (n = 29).
3. Is the public health surveillance system able to detect and manage the cases and their contacts, and identify a resurgence of cases in Brookings?
   a. Mitigation Level: No, almost twice as much testing is needed for Brookings County and about 5 times more testing is needed for South Dakota.
   b. Suppression Level: No, test positivity is 14%-16%, which is above the 3% test positivity needed for suppression.
   c. Approximate Time to Receive Test Results: 1 to 3 days

Brookings County:

• Substantial spread
• 2,254 cases:  199 cases this week vs. 279 in the previous week  
• 446 active cases on Nov 22^nd (down from 550 last Sunday)
• 74 ever hospitalized: 4 new admissions this week vs. 12 in the previous week
• 16 total deaths – 3 new deaths this week vs. 4 deaths in the previous week
• Test positivity among people tested (28%) & among tests done (13%) continues to be high but decreased from 40% & 21% in the previous week

South Dakota: 

• 73,065 cases: 7,684 cases this week vs. 9,977 in the previous week 
• 16,897 active cases on Nov 22^nd (down from 19,360 last Sunday)
• 4,094 ever hospitalized: 450 admissions this week vs. 460 in the previous week
• 577 people hospitalized in SD with COVID on Nov 22^nd (up from 553 last Sunday)
• 819 total deaths (394 in Nov): 175 deaths this week vs. 108 in the previous week 
• Test positivity among people tested (45%) & among tests done (18%) continues to be high but decreased from 58% & 26% in the previous week

USA:

• 12.45 million cases: 1,224,448 new cases this week vs. 1,043,241 in the previous week.
• 261,790 total deaths: 10,534 deaths this week vs. 7,999 in the previous week.

World:

• 58.48 million cases: 4.17 million cases this week vs. 4.06 million in the previous week
• 1.38 million deaths: 68,364 deaths this week vs. 55,894 in the previous week
