COVID-19: Brookings Thresholds
UPDATED: November 28, 2020
- Is the epidemic controlled? No, although Rt has been less than 1.0 in Brookings and South Dakota for the last 8 days.
- Is the health system able to cope with a resurgence of COVID-19 cases that may arise after adapting some measures? Based on current census, Brookings Health System feels they can handle the lowest of the anticipated numbers (n = 8). However, staffing will be challenged, thereby limiting the ability to sustain care for the long-term, with the highest anticipated number (n = 29).
- Is the public health surveillance system able to detect and manage the cases and their contacts, and identify a resurgence of cases in Brookings?
a. Mitigation Level: No, almost twice as much testing is needed for Brookings County and about 5 times more testing is needed for South Dakota.
b. Suppression Level: No, test positivity is 14%-16%, which is above the 3% test positivity needed for suppression.
c. Approximate Time to Receive Test Results: 1 to 3 days

- Substantial spread
- 2,429 cases: 175 cases this week vs. 191 in the previous week
- 466 active cases on Nov 29th (n=446 last Sunday)
- 79 ever hospitalized: 5 new admissions this week vs. 4 in the previous week
- 16 total deaths – no new deaths this week vs. 3 deaths in the previous week
- Test positivity among people tested (17%) & among tests done (9%) continues to be high but decreased from 28% & 13% in the previous week
South Dakota:
- 79,900 cases: 6,835 cases this week vs. 7,684 in the previous week
- 16,930 active cases on Nov 29th (n=16,897 last Sunday)
- 4,468 ever hospitalized: 374 admissions this week vs. 450 in the previous week
- 544 people hospitalized in SD with COVID on Nov 29th (down from 577 last Sunday)
- 943 total deaths (518 in November): 124 deaths this week vs. 175 in the previous week
- Test positivity among people tested (45%) & among tests done (18%) continues to be high but decreased from 58% & 26% in the previous week
USA:
- 13.6 million cases: 1.15 million new cases this week vs. 1.22 million in the previous week
- 272,254 total deaths: 10,464 deaths this week vs. 10,534 in the previous week
Worldwide:
- 62.5 million cases: 4.07 million cases this week vs. 4.17 million in the previous week
- 1.45 million deaths: 71,769 deaths this week vs. 68,364 in the previous week
